Early this Summer, Stark Productions from Spain trusted James Lea Films with a rather interesting assignment. We were tasked with shooting b-roll of the unloading of some rather interesting cargo from a ship – and make it aesthetically pleasing. Five immense electrical transformers had been loaded on the ship in Europe and were to be offloaded at Norfolk Southern Railway’s Lambert’s Point Docks. One of these transformers weighed nearly 1/2 million pounds!
The shoot was in a dangerous area – hard hats and steel-toed boots were a must – and security was high. Some of the cargo was headed to a nuclear power plant. Although our crew does not hold TWIC cards, they were able to negotiate the complexities of shooting in a secured area. There were some things that were off-limits to the shoot and they found ways to get the job done without breaking the rules.
Using Sony EX3 and GoPro Hero 3 cameras, our Director of Photography shot creative angles of the entire operation over a period of two days. Although it was extremely hot on the days of the shoot, he was able to capture impressive time lapse and real time footage. The client was more than pleased with the results.
